Commentary

This unusual stoneware vase belongs to a fertile moment in French Art Nouveau ceramics when marine life became a source of both naturalistic observation and symbolic invention. Its rounded body is enveloped in two distinct coral formations and red starfish modeled in mid-relief. Earthy greens, umbers, amber tones, and flashes of red give the surface a damp, subaquatic quality, as though the vessel had emerged from a tidal pool.

Close examination of the relief decoration reveals that Laurent-Desrousseaux distinguished between two different coral types with considerable precision. The yellow-green encrusting forms — dense, granular, and massive in character — suggest a colonial coral with a calcified, lumpy surface consistent with brain or star coral varieties. The dark grey-black branching forms that spread across the vessel in arboreal structures are distinct in morphology: rigid, upright, and terminating in blunt or slightly swollen ends, consistent with branching coral colonies of the kind documented extensively in the naturalist illustration tradition of the period. Both are coral; neither is seaweed, despite the vase’s longstanding title in the trade. The conventional “seaweed” designation appears to reflect a misreading of the branching forms, which at a distance and under certain glazes can suggest marine vegetation. At close range and in comparison with period naturalist illustration, the coral identification is the more defensible reading.

The vase is especially important because of its inscription: “Robalbhen / Paris / H. Laurent Desrousseaux.” The relationship between Henri-Léon-Charles Robalbhen and Henri Laurent-Desrousseaux long remained poorly understood, with some authors treating “Robalbhen” as a pseudonym, workshop designation, or collaborative identity. Recent scholarship and period Salon documentation instead suggest that the two were separate but closely associated artistic figures whose ceramics were exhibited and marketed together.

Laurent-Desrousseaux trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and exhibited as a painter before turning toward ceramics in the 1890s. His ceramic work belongs to the same broad artistic climate as contemporaries such as Jean Carriès and Auguste Delaherche, in which stoneware became a field for painterly abstraction, Japonisme, irregular form, and experimental glaze.

Period Salon documentation and surviving examples show that ceramics associated with Robalbhen and Laurent-Desrousseaux were predominantly devoted to vegetal and floral forms — orchids, vines, gourds, seedpods — rendered in sculptural relief with experimental glazes. This marine animal composition is therefore a notable departure and occupies a distinctive place within their known production.

The coral and starfish are not applied as simple ornament. They seem to grow from the body of the vessel, softening the boundary between container and habitat. The glaze gathers in recesses and pockets, suggesting wetness, sediment, and biological life. The red starfish interrupt the green and amber ground like vivid organisms clinging to a submerged surface.

Like the atelier’s celebrated vegetal works, the vase transforms surface into living organism. Animal, mineral, and vessel are drawn into a single organic field. Rather than presenting marine life as scientific specimen, Laurent-Desrousseaux creates an immersive environment in which the ceramic body itself seems alive.

Ultimately, this is not merely a vase decorated with starfish, but a ceramic evocation of a marine ecosystem — one in which the Art Nouveau fusion of subject, surface, and form is fully realized.

Its coral decoration, rendered with sufficient naturalist precision to distinguish between encrusting and branching growth forms, places it in productive dialogue with other marine records in the collection, and anticipates the coral vocabulary that would reach its most refined expression in French Art Nouveau ceramics in Geneviève Rault’s “Coral” decor for Sèvres (1902–03).

Related Works

Within the Bestiaire, the vase belongs to a group of echinoderm records that together demonstrate the range of approaches Art Nouveau ceramicists brought to marine invertebrate subjects. The comparison is instructive precisely because the works share a zoological category while differing fundamentally in treatment.

Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer’s Starfish and Waves Charger for Clément Massier (c. 1893–95, luster-glazed earthenware, H 37 × W 29 cm) dissolves the starfish into the iridescent surface almost entirely — the animals emerge from and recede into a field of swirling wave forms, their identity absorbed by the chromatic atmosphere of the glaze. Where Lévy-Dhurmer makes the sea feel psychological, Laurent-Desrousseaux makes it feel ecological.

Clément Massier’s Brittle Stars and Seaweed Cache-Pot (c. 1900, glazed earthenware, H 16.5 cm; on loan to the Art Institute of Chicago, 2019–2025, obj. 250448) extends the echinoderm category into Ophiuroidea — brittle stars rather than true starfish — rendered in vivid red slip against an iridescent gilt-green ground. The sinuous, fluid arms of the brittle star suit the Massier surface treatment particularly well, their movement echoing the whiplash lines of Art Nouveau design.

Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat’s Starfish Vase (c. 1898, glazed stoneware, H 36 cm) pursues the most formally radical approach of the group: the starfish arms are drawn upward to become structural elements of the vessel itself. The animal does not decorate the vase; it constitutes it.

Karl Lindström’s Vase with Starfish for Rörstrand (c. 1900, porcelain with modeled relief, H 23.5 cm, Bestiaire de Céramique Art Nouveau) offers a northern European counterpoint — the starfish rendered in pale celadon and dusty rose against smooth porcelain, restrained and contemplative, confirming that the subject crossed national boundaries while remaining inflected by each maker’s distinct material tradition.

The vase’s coral decoration additionally connects it to the Bestiaire’s Coral category, in dialogue with the Lévy-Dhurmer Jellyfish-Like Creature Cache-Pot, and anticipates the coral vocabulary that would reach its most refined expression in Geneviève Rault’s “Coral” decor for Sèvres (1902–03, Museum of Art and Industry, Roubaix).
