Commentary

This porcelain centerpiece, modeled by Franz Metzner for KPM Berlin in September 1899, takes the fairy-tale subject of the Frog King as the occasion for a Jugendstil ceramic sculpture of unusual formal and symbolic complexity. The composition combines a long, shallow basin with a central female figure, lily-pad-like forms, flowing water imagery, and a small crowned frog, creating a theatrical object that hovers between table sculpture, symbolic vessel, and fairy-tale stage.

The model was shown at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900 and appears in contemporary German art-periodical coverage of KPM’s display. In Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration, it was described under the title “Märchen” and identified as an inkstand executed by the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur for the world’s fair. That contemporary description is important because it confirms that the work was not merely a decorative porcelain novelty, but part of KPM’s deliberate presentation of modern artistic porcelain on an international stage.

Metzner’s composition is unusually ambitious for porcelain. The broad horizontal form stretches outward like a watery landscape, while the female figure rises from the center as if emerging from a dream or myth. The crowned frog, small but iconographically decisive, activates the whole object. It shifts the piece from generalized aquatic symbolism into the specific world of Froschkönig, the Frog King: transformation, desire, threshold, and enchantment.

The soft glaze palette is central to the work’s emotional register. Pale greens, gray-blue shadows, ivory porcelain, and touches of rose create a misty, submerged atmosphere. Rather than using bright decorative color, Metzner and KPM rely on tonal restraint. The effect is not illustrative in a simple fairy-tale sense; it is psychological and atmospheric, closer to Symbolist sculpture than to conventional porcelain tableware.

The female figure is modeled with Metzner’s characteristic sculptural compression. Her posture is poised but ambiguous, neither fully reclining nor fully emerging. She appears suspended between human form and aquatic setting, while the surrounding porcelain surface becomes an enchanted terrain. The frog’s tiny crown introduces a note of narrative tension: a magical promise condensed into a single small emblem.

The work belongs to KPM Berlin’s brief but important turn toward modern sculptural porcelain around 1900. Under the pressure of international competition, especially from French and Scandinavian ceramics, KPM began to move beyond historicist services and toward experimental figural and decorative models. Metzner’s Froschkönig represents this transition at a high level: a porcelain object conceived not simply as luxury tableware, but as a sculptural and symbolic work of art.

Vanessa Sigalas’s 2011 study of Metzner’s ceramic work for KPM is especially important for understanding the model. Her documentation identifies the work as “Schale mit Figur und Frosch mit Krone,” designed in September 1899, model no. 6170, probably executed in Heinecke porcelain. The model-book evidence places the piece firmly within Metzner’s brief but distinctive KPM period, approximately 1898–1903, when he produced some of the manufactory’s most experimental Jugendstil designs. Sigalas further records that of Metzner’s approximately 40 KPM designs, 28 forms were deliberately destroyed in February 1921, making surviving examples of any model exceptionally scarce.

The object introduces a non-French but highly relevant European perspective to the Bestiaire. French Art Nouveau ceramics often treated frogs and amphibians through naturalism, Japonisme, or glaze experiment. Metzner’s version approaches the frog through fairy tale, allegory, and Jugendstil symbolism. The crowned frog is small, but it governs the meaning of the entire composition.

As a work of animal imagery, the piece is unusual because the animal is not the largest or most sculpturally dominant element. Instead, the frog functions as the narrative hinge. The human figure, aquatic basin, and porcelain atmosphere all orbit around the tiny crowned creature. This makes the object particularly valuable within the Bestiaire: it demonstrates that animal subjects can structure meaning even when they appear as small symbolic agents rather than monumental protagonists.

The formal comparison with French Art Nouveau ceramics is instructive. Where Edmond Lachenal, Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat, or Clément Massier often fused animals with organic glaze surfaces, Metzner translates the amphibian subject into porcelain allegory. His concern is less with zoological observation than with transformation, dream, and liminal encounter. The result is unmistakably Jugendstil, yet it speaks fluently to the broader Art Nouveau fascination with metamorphosis.

The Froschkönig links German sculptural porcelain, Symbolist fairy-tale imagery, and animal iconography at the moment when ceramic art across Europe was redefining its ambitions.

Related Works

A darker, moodier version of the same model is known and was illustrated by Irene von Treskow in Die Jugendstil-Porzellane der KPM (cat. no. 31), there recorded as being in Sammlung E. Wagner, Kiel. The present version is distinguished by its pale, translucent, and more atmospheric glaze palette.

Her research notes that the Bröhan-Museum holds the largest collection of Franz Metzner ceramics, and that approximately forty Metzner ceramic models are known in total.

Two works in the Bestiaire treat the same fairy-tale subject and together demonstrate how the Froschkönig narrative circulated across European ceramic traditions at precisely this moment. Max Blondat’s Vase with Nude Female and Frog, likely for Léonce Moline (c. 1900, glazed stoneware, H 32 cm), offers the French sculptural parallel: a nude female figure and a large naturalistic frog in close proximity, rendered with anatomical directness rather than Metzner’s atmospheric restraint. Where Metzner makes the frog small and symbolically charged, Blondat gives it near-equal presence with the female figure, shifting the emotional register from enchantment toward confrontation. Algot Erikson’s Monumental Vase with Snow Princess and Frog Prince for Rörstrand (1902, glazed porcelain, H 64 cm) represents the Scandinavian tradition: the fairy-tale depicted in underglaze painting across the vessel surface, with the crowned princess and crowned frog on opposite sides, united by a shared lily-pad environment rendered in Rörstrand’s characteristic cool, luminous palette. The three works — German porcelain allegory, French sculptural stoneware, and Swedish underglaze painting — confirm that the Froschkönig subject engaged the finest ceramic traditions of the period simultaneously and in strikingly different ways.

The model should also be considered in relation to KPM’s other ambitious Jugendstil porcelain designs shown in connection with the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, including vessels and figural works by Franz Metzner and other designers active at KPM during this transitional period.
