Commentary

This Four-Frog Handled Vase by Horace Bieuville transforms a functional vessel into a sculptural tableau of amphibian vitality. Modeled at the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres in 1897, the form presents four vigorously modeled frogs perched at equal intervals around the vessel’s neck, their legs splayed and toes gripping the surface with remarkable naturalism.

The vase’s architectural structure is defined by four vertical buttresses rising from the foot and flaring outward toward the rim. These supports merge visually with the frogs’ bodies, creating a strong sense of organic unity. The frogs are not applied as ornaments after the fact; they help determine the object’s rhythm, silhouette, and structural logic.

The body of the vase is softly rounded and finished in a speckled ivory-beige glaze, subtly modulated with iron flecks that suggest a weathered mineral surface. Against this quieter ground, the frogs are glazed in mottled shades of celadon green, pale aqua, and earthy brown. Their cooler, damper surface contrasts with the drier tone of the vessel’s body, reinforcing the amphibian subject through glaze as well as form.

Bieuville’s modeling captures the frogs with striking immediacy. Their eyes, limbs, dorsal ridges, and crouched postures are carefully observed, yet the repetition of the four figures gives the vase an almost heraldic order. Each frog appears ready to leap from its ceramic perch, while the circular arrangement gives the object energy from every viewing angle.

The vase belongs to a moment when Sèvres sought to expand beyond neoclassical porcelain and develop a more experimental Art Nouveau vocabulary in stoneware. The combination of naturalistic modeling, matte and speckled glaze surfaces, and integrated animal form reflects the manufactory’s efforts to bring sculptural ambition and modern decorative design into closer alignment.

The impressed “Modèle / SÈVRES” mark and black oval “S.97” date mark confirm the vase’s production at the Sèvres manufactory in 1897. The survival of the original paper price label is an uncommon documentary detail, preserving a trace of the object’s early commercial life.

The vase demonstrates how a major national manufactory could bring zoological subject matter into formal and architectural order. Where studio ceramicists of the period tended to deploy frogs as organic, asymmetrical presences — clinging to a vessel neck, emerging from a pond surface, crouching among aquatic plants — Bieuville and Sèvres subject the same animal to a different discipline: four figures, equal intervals, radial symmetry, each frog part of a structured compositional system. The frogs are not surface decoration; they are the organizing principle of the vase.

Related Works

Within the Bestiaire, the vase belongs to a substantial group of frog and toad works, but stands apart from all of them in formal character. Pierre Roche’s frog plates for A. Bigot et Cie — including the Plat à la grenouille (1897, D 24.6 cm) and the frog-and-lily-pad charger (c. 1897, D 24.1 cm) — deploy the frog as a single organic presence emerging from or submerged within a naturalistic aquatic environment. André Metthey’s green-glazed bottle-form vase with semi-relief frogs (c. 1902) treats the animal as an asymmetrical surface incident on a roughly formed stoneware body. Alfred Renoleau’s frog vase places a single high-relief frog among stylized aquatic plants on a swelling form. Charles Virion’s vase for Boué et Petit gives a single frog in high relief against a drip-glazed ground. In each of these studio works, the frog inhabits the vessel — organic, specific, asymmetrical.

The Bieuville vase proceeds from an entirely different formal premise. Its four frogs are deployed with manufactory precision: equidistant, structurally integrated with the buttresses, and composing a radially symmetrical whole. The result is closer in spirit to architectural ornament than to naturalist observation, and it reflects the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres’s capacity to bring sculptural ambition into formal and systematic order.

A period photograph in Alastair Duncan’s The Paris Salons 1895–1914: Ceramics and Glass, p. 434, shows this model alongside other contemporary Sèvres works, confirming its place within the manufactory’s Art Nouveau experimentation at the end of the nineteenth century.
