Marks & Inscriptions

Incised in script on the underside: “A. Methey / F.”

The signature reads “Methey” with a single t. This is consistent with Metthey’s documented early signing practice: scholarly research drawing on family testimony establishes that he signed his first pieces as “Méthey” and corrected the spelling of his name to the civil form “Metthey” only after receiving the Légion d’honneur in 1911. A vase of c. 1903 would therefore be expected to carry the one-t form.

The slanted “F” under the signature is of uncertain significance; it may indicate an internal atelier mark, a collaborator’s mark, or a workshop notation.

Provenance

Robert Zehil Gallery, Monte Carlo

Literature

M. P.-Verneuil, “Les Objets d’Art à la Société des Artistes Français,” Art et Décoration, July 1903, p. 229, discussing Metthey’s 1903 submission to the Société des Artistes Français and singling out his snail-decorated work for its rustic and amusing character.

Adélaïde Lacotte, André Metthey: La quête du feu et de la couleur (Paris: Lienart éditions / MUDO – Musée de l’Oise, 2022), p. 34, fig. 17, reproducing a period photographic postcard showing related Metthey snail vases, including a version with a taller neck.

Alastair Duncan, The Paris Salons 1895–1914, vol. IV: Ceramics and Glass (Woodbridge: Antique Collectors’ Club, 1998), p. 333, reproducing period photographs of two Metthey grès vases, probably c. 1902, including an early variant of the snail vase form and the bottle-form frog vase.

Robert Zehil Gallery, Monte Carlo, invoice no. 25609, dated April 7, 2025, describing the work as André Metthey, “Escargots” vase, 1903, polychrome grès, signed, height 26 cm, and citing its exhibition at the Société des Artistes Français, Paris, 1903.
