Marks & Inscriptions

Painted Gallé signature with Cross of Lorraine mark to reverse.

Stamped or painted “E † G / déposé” mark to reverse.

The two marks correspond closely to marks D16 and D9 reproduced in La Céramique de Gallé, where both are dated to 1879–1889.

A study sheet by Gallé representing a similar crescent-moon wall form with a different painted scene is preserved at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris.

Marc Maison, Paris, Ref. 14227, “A rare piece by Émile Gallé, moon and landscape fantasy after Joseph Vernet,” documenting a smaller related example of the crescent-moon form with landscape decoration. The entry notes the model’s association with the Musée d’Orsay study drawing.
