Authorship & Production

Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer (painter, decorator, and artistic director, French, 1865–1953) for Clément Massier (ceramist and manufacturer, French, 1844–1917), Golfe-Juan, Vallauris, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, France.

Lévy-Dhurmer served as artistic director at the Massier manufactory from 1887 to 1895, when he departed to concentrate on his painting career. The present cache-pot is dated c. 1890–1895. The technical sophistication of the iridescent glaze and the degree to which the medusoid forms are absorbed into the surface may suggest a mature phase of the collaboration rather than its earliest experiments.
